George Washington

He was the first president of the United States. He was a military leader and refused to be king. He was George Washington. Did he really chop down his father's cherry tree? Study his life and acomplishments.

I think that one of the important issues of the day was the advancement of rebublicanism. In fact that was the whole idea of the newly formed country. In fact the formation of the United States was the culmination of hundreds of years of thought (maybe even thousands of years). It is important to note that republicanism is different than democracy because among other things, "people have inalienable rights that cannot be voted away by a majority of voters."

I find it interesting that George Washington recieved 100% of the electoral college votes. I think that it is interesting to note that he decided not to run for a 3rd term.

I think that was important for people needed to become acustomed to self-government and not relying on one leader.
